KAIPUPU POINT MAINLAND ISLAND SOCIETY

The Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society was established in 2006 .  This volunteer based committee works in colloboration with Port Marlborough and the Department of Conservation , with two committee members representing these organisations.  The role of the Society is to oversee the management of the Sanctuary including biodiversity, education, maintenace, marketing, finance and administration.  This is achieved through our two part time contractors.

STRATEGIC PLAN
These are the  key outcomes we are striving for by 2017 and will be accompanied by an annual plan of prioritised activities and appropriate budget for the year ahead. At all times we will work in close partnership with our foundation partners, Port Marlborough and Department of Conservation, whose representation on our committee is highly valued.

Vision

A wildlife sanctuary that can be enjoyed by all, forever

Mission Statement
To enrich the community through the restoration and guardianship of an indigenous Marlborough Sounds wildlife sanctuary, in which the natural ecosystems, native flora and fauna flourish in a predator free environment, that can be appreciated by all

Underlying Principles
Conservation, Education, Community, Partnership, Volunteerism

KEY EXPECTED OUTCOMES BY 2017

Biodiversity
To develop a self-sustaining ecosystem, by removing pests, recreating natural habitats, reintroducing appropriate species, and allowing the natural regeneration of a coastal forest ecosystem, representative of the one there prior to human arrival.

We will do this by:
  • Producing and following a Biodiversity management plan which will act as a working document for restoration and guardianship processes (including a reintroduction plan)
  • Linking this plan to education, advocacy and research opportunities
  • Maintaining an effective pest monitoring and trapping programme, based on the best scientific process. This will be designed to ensure elimination of all possums, stoats, ferrets and rats while achieving a maximum of 10% mouse monitoring evidence
  • Eliminating plant pests
  • Facilitating public education and involvement in all aspects of the restoration programme
  • Encouraging a community ‘halo effect’ which will help increase birdlife activity across the region

Education
To involve the whole community (preschool to adult) in a hands on. Ever improving conservation experience.  This will increase community understanding of conservation, within a framework of science and research.  Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary will enhance public empathy with nature and lift the competency of the public’s conservation skills.

We will do this by:
  • Creating an active education programme, available to all schools in the region.  The students will be physically engaged in flora, fauna, education and restoration.
  • Ensuring we have a competent, trained educator to lead our programme, supported by more trained volunteers
  • Facilitating school visits to the sanctuary at minimal cost
  • Involving students, parents and teachers in key projects eg. Fluttering Shearwater colony development
  • Being visible in the local community through information and activities: Kaipupu Information Centre, Community Lecture Series, informative brochures and newsletters, Sanctuary signage
  • Exploring the idea of a Marlborough environmental educators’ network, and the concept of a regional ‘eco-hub’
  • Establishing a formal link with NMIT, whereby horticultural students work with our Kaipupu programme as part of their ‘practical’ syllabus

Maintenance and Development
To ensure Kaipupu Sanctuary continues to develop and function in a controlled, ecologically sound, safe manner maximising the visitor experience.

We will do this by:
  • Making sure the sanctuary infrastructures; jetty, pontoon, donation box, toilet, tracks, predator proof fence, viewing seats and seating areas etc. are well maintained, appropriately serviced and are compliant with all legal requirements.
  • Ensuring all signage is accurate, appropriate, and adds to the visitor experience
  • ‘Eco-sourcing’ all plant additions (seed collected within 5km of Kaipupu Point) and that plant removals are consistent with the sanctuary Biodiversity plan
  • Training and suitably protecting any personnel in the use of chemicals or machinery on site (as per DOC protocols)
  • Ensuring that any additional physical features on the Sanctuary are approved by the full Kaipupu Committee, are DOC compliant and consistent with the Strategic Plan objectives
  • Contributing to the development of a safe operating manual and safety plan, applicable to all volunteers working at Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary.

Marketing and Promotion
To ensure Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary captures the hearts and minds of the local community while gaining the financial and volunteer assistance required to meet its ecological and education aims.

We will do this by:
  • Celebrating our success and engaging with the public via regular media releases and at local community events
  • Building effective working relationships with all stakeholders; visitors, members, partners, sponsors, grant providers, local commercial operators, media, iwi, tourism industry groups, educational and other community groups
  • Developing and promoting a range of ‘member benefits’ to increase supporter numbers
  • Holding fundraising events throughout the year to keep Kaipupu ‘top of mind’ eg. Public trips each year to Kaipupu in partnership with others, to increase visitation and support for the project
  • Conducting a review of the current tiered sponsor system and developing a ‘new sponsors’ pack
  • Appointing a high profile and appropriate patron for Kaipupu Sanctuary
  • Producing all promotional material with consistent branding and message
  • Maintaining and staffing (as possible) our Kaipupu information centre so that it engages and informs more people
  • Developing an IT strategy to maximize Kaipupu support through the web and social media
  • Obtaining a recreational concession from DOC and seeking to credit the activity fee to Kaipupu
  • Appointing a Volunteer Coordinator to coordinate/motivate a growing pool of volunteers and convert members into volunteers

Finance and Administration
To ensure Kaipupu Sanctuary is managed effectively and efficiently, that enquiries are promptly dealt with, that our finances are well managed and are compliant with statutory requirements.  All records, minutes, agreements and database should be well maintained and accessible.

We will do this by:
  • Maintaining standard operating procedures which reflect best practice in a voluntary organisation, and are consistent with our constitution.
  • Having a clean annual audit
  • Producing an annual report (finance, reporting and planning) to present to members at our AGM
  • Ensuring we have only one database within the organisation, which is current, able to be segmented and is easily accessible
  • Ensuring that our part time Kaipupu Project Coordinator is allowed to focus on her agreed professional tasks, by attending to as many other tasks as can be carried out by volunteers
  • Accurately recording and filing of all minutes, reports and other relevant papers
  • Meeting the terms of our management agreement with DOC and Port Marlborough (including annual reporting requirements)
