KAIPUPU POINT MAINLAND ISLAND SOCIETY

The Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society was established in 2006 .  This volunteer based committee works in colloboration with Port Marlborough and the Department of Conservation , with two committee members representing these organisations.  The role of the Society is to oversee the management of the Sanctuary including biodiversity, education, maintenace, marketing, finance and administration.  This is achieved through our two part time contractors.

Visitors of all ages value Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary and through this connection with nature are inspired to take action for the environment

Our strategic outcomes are:
  • A variety of tools are used to effectively communicate the story of Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Our environmental education programme is supported by a detailed learning strategy and trained educator  
  • Mātauranga Maori is incorporated into our education programme

Protect - Kaitiakitanga
Biodiversity is protected through removal of introduced pest species and enhanced by native plantings, natural regeneration and reintroduction of appropriate species

Our strategic outcomes are:
  • Native flora and fauna already present at Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary are enhanced and celebrated
  • Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary is proud to be part of DOC’s Operation Nest Egg programme
  • Species richness is increased through reintroduction of appropriate species
  • Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary is free from all introduced pest species

Sustain – Whakauka
Thoughtful planning and diversification creates a successful, resilient future

Our strategic outcomes are:
  • Balance is achieved between growing our tourism potential and protection of the natural environment
  • The diversity of revenue streams is grown
  • Well planned programmes and structures are achieved
  • Our standard operating procedures reflect best practice in a voluntary organisation and are consistent with our constitution
  • A safe environment is provided for all

Collaborate – Mahi tahi
Success is achieved through collaboration

Our strategic outcomes are:
  • KPMIS works collaboratively with local conservation groups 
  • In the long term, Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary forms part of a larger landscape scale level of ecosystem protection in Picton and the Marlborough Sounds
  • KPMIS works collaboratively with researchers
